OBJECTIVES:
MEETING TIMES:
Pioneer Courtyard Project
The courtyard is designed to start with a walkway that comes directly off the west parking lot. After walking a few steps, four concrete pads will meet the walkway and take off in four different angles, in four different directions. In the areas created by these walkways, there will be flowers, plants, and grass, most native to the Palestine area.
In the center of the courtyard, there will be several benches tiered to look like theater seating. Amid the lower level of the seating, there will be a weather-proof podium built to complete the outdoor classroom.
Throughout the courtyard, there will be benches, picnic tables and even handicapped-accessible tables. There will also be tree benches wrapped around trees to provide students with a shady area to sit and socialize. All seating will be constructed out of metal to prevent wear and tear.
The project will cost more than $20,000. PHS was the winner of a Lowe's "Toolbox for Education" grant, awarded to a school with a worthy construction project that will benefit itself and its community. Marathon has pledged to assist in the financing of the nature-preserve part of the courtyard, which includes buying plants and landscaping. And Mont Eagle Mills of Palestine is also offering financial assistance.
In addition to these donations and grants, PHS has planned several fundraisers to help with the project. If you are interested in helping this project please contact Joe Sornberger, Principal at Palestine High School.
