May 2007

Mr. Zach Steele, Student Teacher 4th Grade

Mr. Steele joined us in January as a Student Teacher with Mrs. Adams. It did not take long for all of us at PGS to realize that we wanted to keep Mr. Steele on staff. This young teacher stepped up to the plate and batted a home run with staff and students alike. His care and concern for his students endeared him to veteran teachers and to parents. Not willing that any child should fall behind, Mr. Steele still visits us after school for an after-school-tutoring math time that he instituted. This is a teacher that would be an invaluable member of our teaching staff. Mr. Steele, thank you for being with us!

Ms. Erin Sparks, Great Start Aide

Ms. Sparks provides much calm and peace in our Great Start room as she helps guide little minds, hands, and hearts into the school world. She diligenlty oversees her little flock and provides direction and structure. Her calm manner and pleasant demeanor help her take the world of pre-school in stride. We are thankful for Ms. Sparks and what she brings to PGS. Daily she works so well with parents and guardians. Ms. Sparks helps provide the boost so many children need to be successful in school. Thank you, Ms. Sparks, for being a part of us and for being a part of the lives of so many children.

Mrs. Karen Pifer, Reading / Title I Administrator

Mrs. Pifer has been with our school system for many years providing excellent reading skills for our students. She is a teacher/leader that is valued by staff and students alike. Her financial expertise in managing government funding and her ability to provide excellent learning opportunities for our students makes her invaluable to all of us at PGS. Mrs. Pifer's leadership in development of our Reading curriculum has enabled PGS students to meet and exceed state standards. She is also a leading member of our Character Education team. She is a valued collegue and friend.

Mrs. Jane Walker, Pre-K

There are gifted educators who possess the wonderful ability to pull little people into the wonderful world of school. Mrs. Jane Walker is just that educator. No one enjoys her students more than Mrs. Walker. Her sense of humor as well as her dedication to our little folks makes working with her such a pleasure. This is the first year that PGS has had the privilege and pleasure of having Pre-K with us. We welcome them and Mrs. Walker with open arms. She is truly one of the most delightful people to be around and she makes our days at PGS such a pleasure. Mrs. Walker, we are glad you are with us!

Mrs. Patty Neff, 1st Grade

Mrs. Neff is one of the finest teachers at PGS. Her caring heart pulls her students into the safe, creative learning environment that she diligently provides. Mrs. Neff's kids know that they are somebody important because of the time and energy spent on each student. Never at a loss for a kind word or gesture makes this dynamic teacher much appreciated by students and staff. Teaching is not a just a job to Mrs. Neff, it is a noble calling. This lady lives up to that noble calling and we are blessed. Mrs. Neff, we are thankful for you!

Carson Green, 8th Grade

Carson has been selected to represent our school as Outstanding Student of the Year sponsored by the Wabash Valley Association of Illinois Principals. Carson is an excellent role model academically and athletically. This year he has been selected to be a Character Education Student Advocate.Mr. Green exhibits positive student behaviors at all times and is a pleasure to have as a student. This gentleman is a success as a student, an athlete, and as a young man. Congratulations, Carson!

Mrs. Dessie Carr, Super Aide

Mrs. Carr has been our Library Aide for 6 years. She creates an exciting reading environment that invites PGS students to read. For the past 2 years she has coordinated our DIBELS reading program, which is a reading fluency model. As a lunch room superivisor, she maintains a positive area for our youngsters as they eat lunch. She knows our kids and cares for them. Mrs. Carr is always looking for ways to make our school better. She is also an active member of PTO, which does so much for all of us at PGS. Mrs. Carr, thank you for all that you do for us!

Mrs. Denise Dart, 5th Grade

Mrs. Dart is currently teaching 5th grade and yearly develops our yearbook. She brings enthusiasm to her classroom environment that encourages learning. She is a life-long learner constantly seeking ways to enhance her teaching. Mrs. Dart cares passionately for her students and expects the best from them. Years of teaching experience have found her instructing various primary grade levels. Her zest for teaching and her concern for students make her such a valuable member of our teaching community at Palestine Grade School!

Mrs. Phyllis Adams, 4th Grade

Mrs. Adams has taught for our school system for over 30 years. She is a teacher-leader that models excellence in education to all of us. As a consistent, calm, caring teacher she provides a learning environent that encourages all learners. As a leader in technology in our classrooms, her students experience wonderful learning opportunitities. Mrs. Adams has helped 6 student teachers develop as educators. What a gift she is to our school and our community!
Mrs. Linda Rich, Aide

Mrs. Rich wears many hats in our school system. She is truly an "aide-extraordinare" as she assists in P.E., supervises our cafeteria as we serve 300 students daily, and capably and willingly steps into any area to assist staff and students. With increased state documentation and demands, Mrs. Rich guides our school through the mazes of state demands with the student management programs necessary to keep our school fully accredited. This indespensable employee provides professional and caring guidance to so many of us at PGS!

Mrs. Amber Ramsey, Guidance

Mrs. Ramsey, one of our very own, has returned to Palestine as the Guidance Counselor for our district. We, at PGS, are thrilled to have her. We truly have a counselor in our building working with our students and staff. Mrs. Ramsey has joined our Character Education team and our School Improvement Committee. She recently worked with our students on a "Mix-It-Up" day providing activities for all of our kids teaching social skills and tolerance. To continue the theme of tolerance she will be working with us for a "No-Name-Calling" Week that will reinforce what Character Education at PGS is all about.

Mrs. Autumn Burkett, 3rd Grade

Mrs. Burkett is the brains behind our very successful Recycling Program. She obtained a state grant for us to participate in the project. She also has implemented our Composting Project with an initial order of 10,000 (that's right, 10,000) worms. Never ceasing to grow as an educator, Mrs. Burkett wants to enhance our educational opportunities at PGS by becoming a "Star Discovery Educator".

As a Character Ed Committee member, she has reached across the ocean with our National Award Winning "Purple Hands Project" by partnering with a school in Bulgaria. The old saying that "dynamite comes in small packages" fits Mrs. Burkett! She is a dynomo that enriches our lives at Palestine Grade School!!

Susannah Eckert, 8th Grade Student

Susannah has been selected to represent our school as an Illinois Elementary Scholar Attitude Nominee. Ms. Eckert is a successful athlete that is a positive role model on the field and off. She exhibits excellence in academics and conducts herself with integrity that truly exemplifies our Character Education program. Suzanna participates in our band and choral programs, as well as being one of our three Character Ed Advocates for our student body. We are proud of you, Susannah!!

Mrs. Becky McKinley, P.E.

Mrs. McKinley, possessing the "patience of Job" has daily worked without a classroom (gym) since moving into our new building. She has created innovative physical education opportunities for our 300 students, using our Commons area on rainy days, and there have been many rainy days this autumn. Never complaining, Mrs. McKinley has done an outstanding job with what she has been given. She has made lemonade out of lemons! Good news awaits her as our new gym is almost completed. Mrs. McKinley, thank you for your graciousness!

Mr. Chris Macke, 3rd Grade

Mr. Macke, a wonderful addition to our teaching staff, has joined with an Oblong teacher and Marathon in a Science collaboration that gave him the opportunity to present Science projects at the Marathon Centennial Celebration at the Robinson Community Center. Mr. Macke has put Palestine Grade School out front with his willingness and ability to work with Marathon and our community

October 2006

Mrs. Erika Coffman, Jr. High Science

Mrs. Coffman has brought excitement to our Science program with her willingness to go the extra mile for students. Our students had the opportunity to dissect frogs and worms this year in our new state-of-the-art Science lab. Her enthusiasm and excellent work ethic spills over onto students. Her ability to incorporate technology into the classroom provides our students with added educational benefits. Hats off to you, Mrs. Coffman! You are doing an outstanding job!!

Matthew Schmidlin, 6th Grade Student

Matthew was chosen to attend the 4-H "Mission in Space" Camp in Huntsville, Alabama in October. Matt shared at our October Board Meeting and proved to be a talented speaker. Congratulations, Matthew. PGS is proud of you!

Ms. Tangi Waldrop,

Jr. High Language Arts

Ms. Waldrop, as coach of our golf team, yearly develops the PHS/HHS Tanner Harvey Memorial Golf Scramble at Quail Creek Country Club. Much work and effort is put into this event that is now in its 8th year. Each year, $1,500 in prizes are awarded plus a $500 memorial scholarship in the name of Tanner Harvey. Ms. Walrop completely funds the golf program with this event with an average of $2000 needed for supplies. What an awsome and honorable endeavor! Thank you, Ms. Waldrop for the wonderful investment you make in our children!!

Katie Williams, 5th Grade Student

Katie is the daughter of Jon and Melissa Williams and is a member of the LTC swim team, the Flippers. Through hard work and talent, Katie brought home the State Championship Award in her class. I think we need a sign in front of our school that says, "Palestine Grade School-home of State Championship Swimmer Katie Williams" Not only is Katie an outstanding swimmer, she is an outstanding student and we are proud to have her. Awesome job, Katie!
